Sacred Smoke & Spirit - Why I Use Copal, Palo Santo & Sage in My Spiritual Healing Sessions
By Tiffany Farley at “a west style story”
In every spiritual healing session, whether it’s a Reiki healing, ThetaHealing, a Mediumship reading, Akashic Records reading, or an intuitive tarot reading, I work with tools that hold spiritual lineage and deep energetic resonance. Among my personal favorites and in my option the most powerful are Copal incense. I love Palo Santo sticks, and smudge bundles just as much, but they all hold their own unique energy.
These sacred tools have been used for centuries by Indigenous cultures across the Americas for energy clearing, spiritual protection, and connection to higher realms. I don’t just sell these on my site, I use them in my practice every day because I believe in their power, and I’ve witnessed the transformation they support in my personal life as well as my clients.
Copal Incense otherwise known as the “Bread of the Gods”
Sourced from the trees of Mexico and Central America, Copal resin was revered by the Mayan and Aztec civilizations as “Bread of the Gods.” Used in ceremony to communicate with the Divine, it is one of the most powerful natural tools for cleansing negative energy and raising spiritual vibration, and calling in angelic divine energy. I burn White Sage when I am about to call in Spirit and I burn Copal incense sticks after every healing session . Its clean, resin-rich smoke helps to open the crown chakra, cleanse the aura, and create a direct pathway to divine guidance while protecting the energy. I love to use Copal when I want to cleanse my healing space, align with my higher self, or invite clarity into my spiritual practice. I am also a certified herbalist and from an herbalism perspective, Copal, Palo Santo and White Sage are known for their antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, adding to its power as a holistic healing ally.
What’s the Difference Between White, Brown, and Black Copal?
While White, Brown, and Black Copal may differ in color, they all share the same sacred essence and smell. In my experience, Copal resin....whether white, brown, or black... holds the same fragrant, uplifting scent and the powerful ability to purify a space energetically. All forms of Copal incense support deep spiritual cleansing, helping to remove negative energy, clear away unwanted entities, and invite in high-vibrational, angelic presence. That said, I believe the darker the Copal, the stronger its energetic impact. Brown and Black Copal tend to be more potent during full moons, eclipses, or times of emotional or energetic intensity. White Copal is best used for everyday use of cleansing your sacred space. When you’re navigating heavier emotions or spiritual shifts, Copal smudging with the darker varieties can offer a deeper layer of energy clearing, anchoring light and protection into your space.
Palo Santo also known as Holy Wood for Energy Healing & Cleansing
Palo Santo wood, also known as “Holy Wood,” is sustainably harvested from South America. I personally love Ecuadorian Palo Santo. Its warm, grounding scent brings calm and sweetness into a space, making it ideal for emotional healing, meditation, and post-clearing restoration. I often use Palo Santo sticks for energy clearing after intense Reiki healing, ThetaHealing, Mediumship reading, Akashic Records, or an intuitive tarot reading sessions, as it helps anchor in the new energy and soothe the emotional body post session.
Burning Palo Santo helps to clear low vibrations, invite joy, and reset the energetic tone of your home or body. Whereas, White Sage, is known to invoke Sacred Presence of Spirits energy. There’s a common misconception that White Sage smudging for banishing spirits or closing portals. But in traditional Indigenous teachings, Sage is actually used to call in spirit allies, invoke sacredness, and create ceremonial space.
Utilizing Sage as sacred smoke, to call in protection with the connection spirit energies
Sage’s smoke is an antibacterial and purifying sacred smoke. It is energetically potent and healing. Ideal for clearing mental fog, raising spiritual awareness, and opening intuitive channels. I prefer to utilize white Sage when beginning a spiritual ritual, connecting to your ancestors, or inviting protection and guidance from Spirit.
As a professional medium, I use Sage to bless the space and invite spiritual guidance before connecting with loved ones who’ve crossed over, such as guides or ancestors. Calling in Spirit energies safely is of the upmost importance in this sacred ceremonial work. It helps to prepare both myself and my client for our session safely.
